A small brush fire broke out this afternoon near Quail Valley in southwest Riverside County, but fire officials said they didn’t expect it to grow more than 10 acres with the cool and cloudy weather.

The fire began about 2:55 p.m. near La Bertha Lane and Hampshire Drive. Cheri Patterson, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department, said the blaze wasn’t threatening structures.

She said 25 firefighters were battling the fire that initially burned less than one acre. The cause was under investigation, she said.

Quail Valley is about 10 miles northeast of Lake Elsinore.

RIMOFTHEWORLD.net is reporting:

Currently there are 643 personnel on scene of the Grass Valley Fire. Good progress continues with line construction in the Miller Canyon drainage. Fire crews continue to mop up and patrol around structures on the eastern flank. On the western and northern flanks, improvement to the hand and dozer lines and continued mop up is in progress. Rehabilitation will continue.

There is no anticipated incident movement.

Infrared flights flew the fire to determine the fire has burned 1,140 acres. Damage assessment teams continue their work. Reports indicate 162 structures have been destroyed and 20 structures damaged.

No changes in acreage or containment have been released on the Slide Fire. According to official reports, low intensity fire behavior with active surface and backing fire has been observed. Some torching has also occurred. The fire continues to have a potential to move to the north. Crews are making progress containing the fire's spread on west and northwest flanks. Southerly containment lines in the southwest corner of the fire are complete.

Officials state they are beginning to achieve success with perimeter control strategy as critical resource needs are met. There are 1,984 personnel working this fire.

The Slide Fire is 35% contained and has consumed 13,800 acres. Over two hundred structures have been lost. There is no estimate of release of the Damage report.

The cause remains under investigation

The Rosa Fire in the hills west of Temecula was declared controlled by the Riverside County Fire Department. That means there is no threat for the fire to hop containment lines and that the fire is being put out.

The Rosa Fire began Tuesday in three locations. Fire officials expect the fire was arson. Two of the small fires were put out quickly. A third found dead brush along Via Santa Rosa and burned more than 400 acres. The fire caused evacuations and shut down access to the area. No injuries were reported and a suspect has not been found.
No structures were damaged or destroyed by the fire.

Fire officials are investing a two-story house fire in Arrowbear that burned just south of the Green Valley Fire boundary.

The fire burned down the home at Music Camp Road and Highway 18. The home is in an evacuation area, said Adrienne Freeman, spokeswoman on the Green Valley Fire.

Firefighters were called out to the home at 10:30 a.m. because of a house on fire.

"There were some reports of explosions heard," she said.

A helicopter working on the nearby Green Valley Fire dumped water on the home and hand crews kept the fire from spreading into nearby brush. Firefighters found people inside the home and no injuries were reported.

Freeman did not know who the people were and why they were there.

Saturday, October 27, 2007 -  10:29 AM   - SAN DIEGO

Across San Diego County, firefighters continued their assault on five separate fires this morning and have begun to encircle them.

The Rice Fire in Fallbrook is 80 percent contained and has burned 9,000 acres. Since Friday afternoon, firefighters have been able to double their containment area with the fire, according to CalFire. The fire was started by downed power lines on Monday and roared across Interstate 15, burning 206 homes, two commercial properties, and 40 outbuildings. Two hundred homes are still threatened.

Portions of Fallbrook have opened back up to residents. Four firefighters were injured during the firefight.

Smoke dumping into Temecula Valley has eased from the Poomacha Fire, as containment on the blaze jumped 15 percent overnight to 35 percent.

The fire continues to burn in northeastern San Diego County near the Palomar Mountain area.

The fire started Wednesday when a structure became engulfed on the La Jolla Indian Reservation. It tore south and west destroying 78 homes and 19 outbuildings. Two thousand homes are still threatened and evacuated, including the Pala Reservation and Pauma Valley.

The fire has caused 14 injuries.

Since the fire began, smoke from the blaze has funneled into the Temecula Valley and sparked fear the fire could be heading into Riverside County. Cooler temperatures have slowed the fire’s march toward the county line, officials said.

Fire officials let the Poomacha Fire join with the Witch Fire overnight.

The Witch Fire tore through the heart of San Diego starting Sunday, burning through homes in Poway, Escondido, Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Santa Fe.

The fire has scorched nearly 200,000 acres and is 60 percent contained. Full containment is expected by Nov. 5.

Evacuations are still in place for Julian. The fire has slowed its march to the west, southwest and northwest, officials said.

The fire has destroyed 911 homes, 30 businesses, 175 outbuildings and 239 vehicles. Two people died in their Poway home after not evacuating. An additional 62 homes, 10 businesses, and 50 outbuildings were damaged.

Thirty-four firefighters have been injured in the firefight.

Firefighters gained on the Harris Fire, which started Sunday and has burned 85,800 acres in southeast San Diego along the US-Mexico border.

Overnight, fire containment jumped from 20 to 55 percent. The fire has caused 37 injuries and one death. The fire has destroyed 188 homes, one business, and 222 outbuildings as well as damaging 252 other buildings.

Most residents have been let back home except for the 1,500 homes still threatened near Highway 94 in Portrero.

The Horno/Ammo Fire on Camp Pendleton is 90 percent contained and has burned 21,084 acres since it started Wednesday. Two firefighters have been injured.

Saturday, October 27, 2007 -  10:25 AM   - ORANGE COUNTY

Hundreds of Corona residents kept a watchful eye on fires nearing Riverside County borders today, which officials have said pose no imminent threat.

The Santiago Fire is continuing to make a slow crawl toward the Riverside County line but fire crews were able to build five new miles of firebreaks, said Dennis Cross, Santiago Fire spokesman.

“Folks in Horsethief Canyon probably saw flames late last night,” he said. “But it wasn’t what it appeared to be. Those flames and that smoke is coming from the interior of the fire. The fire isn’t breaking away from our lines.”

The arson-set Orange County fire is still 35 percent contained. Fire officials were able to get an accurate mapping of the fire and reduced the acreage to 27,521 this morning, Cross said.

The number of structures destroyed remains at 14 homes and 8 outbuildings and those damaged are holding at eight homes and 12 outbuildings.

Last night, bulldozers created five miles of new firebreaks along the Riverside County border and hand crews are scheduled to create more this morning, Cross said.
The fire continues to slowly creep toward the Riverside County line.
“It’s following the topography of the area,” Cross said.

The weather is cooperating and the moisture in the morning aided fire crews, he said.
Authorities are looking for a white standard-cab Ford pickup that was seen Sunday near the fire’s point of origin.

A $250,000 reward has been offered to information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who started the blaze at Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon roads near Irvine.

The arson tip line is 1-800-540-05282.
